How to Keep Your Babies Warm and Cozy During Cold Seasons

Winter is a beautiful season. It’s the perfect excuse for cuddling and drinking all the hot chocolate you can manage. But even the most resilient adults can admit that the cold can get old fast. During this season, it might seem as if no matter how many layers you put on, the cold still seeps into your bones. So, if adults have a hard time, what about our babies?

Parents are often faced with the eternal challenge of keeping their little ones safe and cozy during wintertime. It’s freezing outside, and even indoors, it can be challenging to regulate your body temperature, even more so for babies. For them, it’s more than just uncomfortable. It can lead to sickness.

Here are some tips on how to keep your little one warm and cozy during a cold night:

Tip #1: Layer Wisely

During the colder months, most parents, especially first-time parents, think that wrapping their baby in as many layers as possible is the best thing. There’s one big problem about this though: what about diaper changes in the middle of the night?

Your baby is more likely to suffer the cold when it takes you forever to get them out of their layers and back into it after a diaper change. The best thing you can do is dress them in one more layer than you. Besides that, make sure to put them in clothes that are easy to put on and remove. This way, you can minimize their exposure to the cold.

Tip #2: Move Their Sleeping Spot Around

One thing you have to consider during the colder seasons is the positioning of where they sleep (ex. the crib.) During summers, you might position them a little closer to the window. But when winter comes around, you have to be prepared to move a few things around.

Even if your baby’s room window is closed, a big gust of winter air can still creep in. To be on the safer side, install all the window safeguards possible to keep the cold away. You can also position your sleeping baby several feet away from drafty windows, fans, air vents, and outside walls.

Tip #3: Preheat Their Mattress

If your home just happens to be more susceptible to the cold no matter what, you could always preheat their mattress. This is a safe and effective way to ensure that your baby has a fitful sleep without suffering from the cold. You could do this in several ways.

You can use a hot water bottle or heating pad. Do this at least 30 minutes before you have to lay them down for bed. Make sure to take the bottle or the pad out before you put them in the crib to avoid overheating or burns. Also make sure to use your own hands to confirm the temperature is not too hot. You could also buy a dedicated baby warmer mattress if you want to avoid heating water or a pad every night during winter.
